[SUNDAY SNACK: Volume 2] The Future is Sample Size Snacks, Plus Why You Should Always Eat on Pretty Plates Like These & Jenna Lyons New GF
Whole Foods Under $5 Cheese, More Mini Cheese Scores, Thrifted Plates, Target Discounts
Welcome back to the weekend’s Sunday Snack! Volume 1 had some personal stories, so I limited it to paid subscribers and this one is for all subs (thank you). The series will be partially about food, lifestyle and entertainment and sharing the big impact of proactively pursuing little joys in our down time. Volume 2 covers mini madness, curated plates, a Bristol Farm deal — and Jenna Lyons’ new flame?
Did you know that many stores [in LA, at least] sell cheese in remnants and mini sizes? It’s my way of sampling the cheese I’ve been curious to try, yet wouldn’t normally buy. So fun! Hatch Chile cheese? Yes, please.
Mini Madness
I tell whoever will listen to my rants that MINI foods are the future, whether it’s a sample size, snack size, bite size, mix and match set, etc. You get it. I am sensing, from shelf surfing, that brands are finally doing the math and making smaller sizes for minimum wage demographics. In South Carolina, for example, $7 minimum wage in a 12% tax bracket will yield $6.16 which can’t even cover this Starbucks 48 oz iced coffee bottle… although they are currently 2 for $11, so go stock up today.
At the bottom, I’ll teach you how to pay less at Target!
If I had a family, I don’t think I would ever be that crazy coupon lady, but I’ll never forget that even Sarah Michelle Gellar once said, “Why should I pay more?”
Sample Size Cheese, Please
I don’t know if this is common outside of Los Angeles, but I have found this practice at Whole Foods Fairfax and 3rd, Bristol Farms West Hollywood and Ralphs on 3rd and LaBrea. Care to start a movement in your state? Then, set your charcuterie up on a lively plate.
She knows!

Life is short and plates should be pretty
Of course, I’m obsessed with mismatched dishes and colorful plates make meals so much more entertaining. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used these for Jack in the Box jalapeno poppers. Not a thrifter like me? Keep an eye out for them on Facebook Marketplace or mix and match with an Etsy Seller who has already done all the curating work.
I go bananas when I find cool patterned plates at the thrift, but I want to leave you with some tips if you go with vintage:
Thrifting Safety Tips:
Google search the plates to make sure they weren’t made before lead regulations.
If there is any ‘crazing’ or glazing cracks - on any of your plates - ditch them.
Some that may not be suitable for food consumption can still make cool home decor, like the fruit bowl I just broke this morning before even getting a chance to set it up.
Lately, the cool kids are going grannycore and hanging plates on walls again.
Click this if you’re curious about grannycore clothing. It’s still a thing, especially going into fall. BTW, A Vintage Affair is in LA this weekend.
Bristol Farms in West Hollywood has $25 water? Yup.
This is what a jug of $25 water looks like at my favorite gourmet West Hollywood grocer. I haven’t scanned the benefits, so I’m not shaming, but just stood there, wide eyed.
On the flip side, they have their house cream cheese and my 3 favorite flavors (chives, jalapeno and garlic herb) are only $2.99 through Halloween! You have to try them if you’re local:
TARGET PRICE MATCHING - What everyone should know
Target’s policy is to price match the following list — and don’t sleep on checking Target.com, which tends to have lower prices than the big city Target stores. I bought some Apple chargers there while I was in NYC and was annoyed when I saw them cheaper at Apple and remembered the policy. Target happily refunded the price difference (but they only honor it within 14 days). Normally at the check out stand, I’ll show them screengrabs I’ve just found online and they confirm on their devices.
Entertainment
In a surprising move, I did not watch TV this week, aside from the latest Rez Dogs episode that was not directed by series co-creator Sterlin Harjo this time. It’s a favorite series I raved about last week. (Did everyone else catch the past gum blooper? Hilarious.)
Jenna Lyons with new GF Cass Bird was all the buzz at New York Fashion Week
Back to the now, Jenna Lyons, the biggest RHONY housewife this season, was photographed kissing her latest girlfriend, photog Cass Bird at the onset of New York Fashion Week. However, the photo quickly vanished from IG. Not a surprise as they’ve been all over Jenna’s IG stories. This photo showing them together would be $75 for me to license, so check it out with this link, instead.
Cass Bird is one of my absolute favorite photographers, always able to bring out talent’s ‘spirits’ in each image, which is so much more difficult than it sounds. Here’s the one I want to own someday (the shot from that back) that I first saw spotted while blogging about hip LA pop up for brand Sophomore in 2010/11.
If you’re new here, here’s my past story about shooting Jenna in NYC.
TELFAR Sold Out!
If you caught my TELFAR street fashion story last week, the designer immediately SOLD OUT his entire fall color collection immediately. The only bags remaining in stock are collaborations with other brands and three sizes of what I call “pill pack pendants.”
Free Zoom Link Coming
I promised you a free digital download and I’ll send some zoom virtual background links for you to test out (and report back?) this week, after I make some fixes.
I’m liberating my SECRET STASH
More on New York Fashion Week past and present is coming this week - and some eye opening photos and videos I’ve never shared. My first selfie stick sighting? Anna Wintour’s first selfie? Was I the first to spot some big influencers? Can’t wait to break out images I’ve been hoarding for a decade. IYKYK
