Rocker Tees? Yes, Please.
Plus: A DJ's personal collection that created a micro community during the pandemic
I’ve been thinking about strategizing ‘a look’ for myself beyond black sweatshirts and boyfriend jeans, paired with vintage or designer heels. Then I think, “Nah. I’m good.” One of my college era friends I’ve mentioned, John B, made up “Black and Denim” song lyrics about me, although I distinctly remember I had a brief dresses + vintage necklaces habit back then, too.
I do seriously want to adopt this timeless rocker tee + jacket chic look that I’ve style spotted in the past, well played, by Taylor Jacobson in LA and many New York Fashion Week followers about 10 years ago, above and below1:
Below, DJ Louise Chen’s father turned her on to music and she started posting photos and stories around her vintage band t shirt collection during the pandemic. She invited others to share their own stories around these collectibles and ended up creating a micro community. Watch her share her collection on VOGUE France and click the subtitle option.
I also once had (and probably still have) an obsession with LA stylist Taylor Jacobson, who I also spotted in a vintage Rolling Stones t shirt below, while she was promoting a capsule collection at Ron Herman on Melrose Avenue.
Taylor was always cool, the few times I snapped her around LA. She’s a mom now!
Vintage tees = big business, witnessed by watching a dealer in action below, who sells to Kanye, Jerry Lorenzo and Migos. When this video was made, he quoted the most expensive sweatshirt he had sold - at $17,000.
“I’m like a drug dealer, but with vintage T-shirts.” - Patrick Matamoros
Patrick set up a booth on a popular SoHo NYC street corner when he wasn’t getting work and discovered he had a knack for snagging valuable vintage music t shirts, some of which he distresses by hand.
I’ll admit I only have one Pink Floyd T Shirt to start with, but just talked myself into slowly rebuilding my collection and owning this look.
Do we know their names in the top three shots? I’ve misplaced some records over the years. ;)
