Dailies: What does a New York Minute look like? Mine was wildfire orange, but I flipped a cancelled flight into a new video series.
[A New York Minute] - I had to go to NYC for two days to ship 100 lbs of documentary materials back to Los Angeles and see a couple friends, with the hopes of getting a couple blocks of time to shoot street fashion. Check, check, fail? I really only had about an hour of good shooting time on my final day and it was limited to NYC’s upper east side, near my hotel. I kept my expectations low and thought I failed because I didn’t interview anyone about street fashion, but I did capture a lot of great trend footage near Bergdorf Goodman (including their head of fashion 2x). As I was going through the footage while camping out at the airport for my flight back to LA, I counted about 26 stories, so it wasn’t a fail, after all. I noticed a lot of these trends in the footage I hadn’t caught in the moment, and launched a new IG series, mentioned below.
The thing is, I lived in NYC for a year and a half, in 2011/2012. I wasn’t expecting the overwhelming memories. I opened my airport shuttle’s window to shoot these Bottega Veneta ads that are on my Instagram, and, in inhaling the city, the memories came flooding in…
On the topic of inhaling, I was there during the highest concentration of wildfire smoke, which turned Manhattan into an orange, pulsating glow. In case you missed it, The New York Times had a disturbing timelapse on Instagram, posted below.
My big shooting plans suddenly became a game show, with lockdowns, masks, moving flights, forgotten ID’s (at UPS), an airport shuttle that was, curiously, 12 hours early, but I kept it light and went with the flow the entire time. (I shrugged it off and hopped in the shuttle anyway, since I happened to be in the lobby and only had a backpack and a Givenchy crossbody bag for camera gear).
Style in Slow Motion
I also managed to be quick on the draw to capture a few locals in slow motion and posted a new series I had been putting off, simply titled “STYLE in Slow Motion.” Episodes 1 and 2 are posted below. Are they groundbreaking? No. Is it fun to go on a visual walk with the locals? Yes, it is for me and hope you have fun walking with them, too.
I’ll be sharing more from inside Bergdorf’s shoe sale, 3 favorite Dior Book Totes, a mystery man I spotted in Harlem from my airport shuttle and much more on my IG. I hope the internet can help me find him.
I loved this dynamic duo below, especially his fashion commitment.
The man below is wearing a MARNI sweater and if you look closely, you can see the distressed threading details.
BTW, moving 100 lbs of boxes out of Manhattan had to be my biggest production accomplishment of the year that I hope to never repeat.
I’m happy to have gotten at least a handful of street photography shots and have been hoarding 200+ photos for my Summer Fine Art Launch. I teared up in one photo shop when they put my very first test print in my hands.
Yesterday, my facebook reminded me of this memory from 2012, living in New York, while working on a couple TV series. I was running around with my work walkie that day and feeling grateful that I got to live there for a while (subletting in Gramercy Park, the UES, Union Square and Williamsburg). I’m ready to go back and am now project and job hunting on both coasts. Until next time, New York.
