Casual Friday: Kambrell in Beverly Hills
This is a short story about street fashion, but it’s metaphorically about my attraction to non linear storytelling and how I’ve capitalized on catering to short attention spans.
First, please click this or the photo to meet Kambrell, as substack doesn’t seem to allow embedding IG stories (just IG posts). I’ll get to my point after the fashion angle.
I was shooting on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, across the street from Louis Vuitton, when I spotted Kambrell, who had such a captivating presence, simply crossing the street. (Like me, “Kam” is also into resale). Watch the video to see the full fit (short for “outfit” for my readers who don’t follow street fashion).
I wasn’t quite sure how to cut it because the short clip was originally part of a bigger Rodeo Drive shoot and story. I wanted to change the story after I left Beverly Hills, but didn’t quite have all the footage I needed, but made it work.
I caught Kambrell crossing the street in a long shot and had to approach from behind to get that medium shot — and I would really come across as a cringey style stalker if the edit was in real time, right?
I chose to start with the closer shot - then reverse to walking backwards to see the full look. I had to end with a close up on the hat to match my narration (“soundbite” is what we call some voiceovers in TV). All this to say…
All the non linear storytelling choices I’ve made as a TV + Digital Producer are being put to good use.
It’s incredibly satisfying to pack a story sandwich into 22 seconds vs the usual 22 minutes and I’m here for it.
I’ll start posting more fashion videos in June, with my VIP archives and fresh faces.
